SDC Supports Hungry Children and Families on Volunteer Day

2nd Annual Volunteer Day Held on September 11, 2018 

SDC employees participated in our second annual Volunteer Day, a company-wide initiative to give back to the communities in which we live and work. 

Team members in our Tempe office volunteered at Feed My Starving Children, a food-packing facility in Mesa, AZ benefiting hungry children worldwide. In Waltham, our team volunteered at the Greater Boston Food Bank, the largest hunger-relief organization in New England. Other SDC team members supported a variety of local organizations from the West Seattle Food Bank to the Ronald McDonald House in Chapel Hill, NC.

SDC SAS Programmers Present at Western Users of SAS Software (WUSS) Conference

Bharath Donthi and Lingjiao Qi Speak at WUSS 2018 

Two members of SDC's SAS programming team were invited to present educational workshops at the 2018 WUSS Conference in Sacramento, CA on September 5-7. 

Bharath Donthi, Associate Director, SAS Programming, presented "Defensive Programming Techniques for Ongoing Clinical Studies." His presentation focused on techniques that programmers can implement to help avoid the need to re-program datasets and table/listing outputs as the database is updated throughout the study. 

Lingjiao Qi, Senior SAS Programmer, presented "Formatting Outputs for Clinical Trial Data to Aid in Readability." Her presentation covered several techniques to increase output readability by aligning both character and numeric data in summary tables and supporting listings. In addition to presenting at the conference and co-authoring both submissions, Lingjiao won a 2018 New SAS Professional Award presented by the WUSS organization.

Krista Mullen (Senior Manager, Data Management at SDC) co-chaired an educational session at the Society for Clinical Data Management (SCDM) 2018 Annual Conference along with Patrick Nadolny (Associate Vice President, Global Head, Clinical Data Management and Programming at Allergan). Their session titled "Evolution or Revolution: How Will Emerging Technology Innovations Change Data Management?" was held on Tuesday, September 25 at 1:30-3:00pm.

Employee Spotlight 

Dale W. Usner, Ph.D.

Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) & Sr. Vice President, Strategic Scientific Consulting

Dr. Dale Usner joined SDC in 2011 and currently serves as the company’s CSO and Sr. Vice President, Strategic Scientific Consulting.

In this capacity, he manages SDC's Strategic Scientific Consulting group, a new department of the company announced earlier this year. With over 20 years of experience, Dale is SDC's foremost thought leader on new statistical techniques, regulatory guidance and updates, and clinical trial scientific acuity. Two areas of statistical foci include correlated outcomes and presenting complex statistical methods in a digestible manner to non-statisticians. He enjoys mentoring employees in clinical trials, statistics, business, and soft skills such as public speaking and management training. 

Prior to joining SDC, Dale held high-level biometric operations management positions at Bausch & Lomb, AVI BioPharma, and ZymoGenetics. He maintains an array of therapeutic area expertise, including ophthalmic pharmaceuticals, ophthalmic devices, oncology, neurology, gastrointestinal, and anti-viral/anti-infective. He also has a breadth of regulatory body meeting experience with the FDA, PMDA, and EMA, including involvement in advisory committee meetings. 

Dale holds a Ph.D. in Statistics from Oregon State University, a Master of Science in Statistics from Carnegie Mellon University, and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Dickinson College.  

Based in SDC’s Tempe, AZ office, Dale enjoys riding his motorcycle, training in martial arts, and hiking in state and national parks with his girlfriend and dogs.
